Đồng hồ đo áp suất General hoạt động dựa trên nguyên lý biến dạng của ống Bourdon. Ống Bourdon là một ống hình chữ U được làm từ kim loại có độ đàn hồi cao. Khi chất lỏng hoặc khí tác động lên một đầu của ống Bourdon, ống sẽ bị biến dạng. Sự biến dạng của ống Bourdon sẽ được truyền qua một hệ thống bánh răng và đòn bẩy để làm quay kim chỉ thị trên mặt đồng hồ.
